Thanksgiving Fun!

Dear Family,

Well it's been an interesting, but really good week! First things first we had a bunch of changes through the mission this last week. So I'll get to those later but, big thing is that we taught a bunch of lessons this week! I feel like I haven't taught sit actual lessons in a long time. Maybe it has been... I'm not sure what a long time is anymore, the mission is messing with my perceptions of time! But we taught a lot of lessons and had a lot of fun doing it!

So first I'll talk about the new mission standards. So president Wada has things called "S.O.S. Invitations" they are when you talk to people about church for some amount of time and invite them to make a step forward in their progression by giving them a clear decision between 2 options. He asks us to have 70 of those at least a week. But this Thursday we had zone conference from 9:00 am until 6:00 pm. It was long. But he gave us some new things to do for those Invitations which basically means we teach a whole heck of a lot more lessons on the street than we used to. Also he set up a new starting investigator program where the very first time we meet for a lesson after the initial contact we make sure to give them a soft baptismal invitation basically "if it's true will you be baptized? And we've already had the opportunity to ask 2 people that question and they both agreed. One is more promising than the other but they are both good. So we also got a dinner with the Larsen's this week which was way more energetic than usual it was great. Lots of fun. So now I'll tell you about some miracles and some fun stuff.

Miracle, we tried twice to visit a p.i. on Friday, and both times they were not home, but his wife said the second time that we can try tomorrow. (Good to know she's on board) so we came back on Saturday night at the same time and he came out invited us into his entryway (genkan) and we talked there for about 40 minutes. What's funny is that the very first thing he said is (translated) "look, I can't convert immediately. I can't do that, I've been Catholic all my life." And it sounded like he expected that to be the end of the visit but as good missionaries we followed up on the pamphlet, he hadn't read all of it but he had some questions on the priesthood. So standing in his entryway I taught him what it is and had him read some definitions in the pamphlet to which he had one question. Is this saying that my church doesn't have the priesthood? Yes, yes it is. But he was strangely enough, just fine with that. So we kept talking and it reached a point while talking about Jesus Christ that I asked him, Tai  San, (his name) if this is true will you follow Jesus Christ's example and be baptized? Which he then proceeded to say no to. So we explained further that if in 4 months, if you know it's true, and it is, will you want to follow Christ's example? To which he said of course I will. I will do it. So now is when we were running out of time and invited him to learn even more with us every week. And again, shut down hard, but then he asked if we would come over every month to teach him, for 30 minutes each time. And we accepted. Then we prayed and extended commitments and he will be praying once a week until we visit in December. So that went incredibly well and we felt like we were seriously led by the spirit. Boom. Miracle!

Next miracle, shorter this time. Is that I was praying on Sunday asking that at least one of the people we invited would come to church. Then halfway through sacrament, 2 random people we've never met before walk on. Both construction workers and sit down with us. So we helped them through church and taught them a lesson, and now we have a lesson next week with one of them and the other might join. Crazy! Other than that we dendo'd as hard as possible and have taught a ton of street lessons this week, my confidence in teaching is doing better and everything is getting better here. I hope it continues.

Some fun things from the week is that we visited a family, the Suzuki's who have had contact with a MTC teacher because he homestayed at their house once. And they came to our basketball activity on Saturday morning. It ended up being a lot of fun! 15 people came! Now we will be working on them as we can. Also we played basketball on Wednesday with a p.i. And he has some better potential now! Woo! And here's another funny thing. Japanese people hate rain, that's a fact. So we got all set up for eikaiwa and stuff and had all the assignments already out for like the first time ever, and 5 people came. All because it was raining! So I got to become a student!

So yeah! That was my week pretty much! Today was zone Pday at the park right by my apartment and we played ultimate frisbee for 2 ish hours. My team even won! But to add a funny unfortunate note to it, we did a whole "last point wins" thing and we won. Then we decided to do one more. So on the throw that would have given the other team the winning touchdown my face was in the right place at the right time and I ended up taking a big frisbee right to the nose. To make it even cooler blood was running down my face!  I felt like a boss for sure. I had just saved the game with my face after all! But then one of the members we were playing with told me I was bleeding and took care of it, and drove me to his house where we made sure it was all taken care of. So all in all, we won, I got to feel like a boss, and everyone had fun! I'll send a picture of my bandaged nose lol

I hope that answered most of the questions. As for thanksgiving, I can't wait until next years Thanksgiving and Christmas. But this year I'll be at the Sorensons, in about 30 minutes, to eat Thanksgiving dinner there with them. And we'll be on base for Thanksgiving day, so we get 2 Thanksgivings! I'm glad everything is ready for Christmas there! I also look forward to seeing everyone, I hope Ollie recognizes me! He's the best! Kaiden has a good little brother. I hope everyone had a great week and don't forget, I love you all tons and tons and 2!

 Love,
 Elder Gailey

Hello Everyone!

Dear 家族,

お元気ですか?今日日本語でこの手紙を書きませんけれどもびくりするように日本語で書きます。今週はよかったですよ!色々と経験してたくさん人々と話しましたから嬉しいです。日本語ですみません。

(Dear family , How are you? I'll write in Japanese to surprise you though not writing this letter in the Japanese today. It was good this week! I'm glad because I talked with people a lot by various and experience. I'm sorry in Japanese.)

Well everyone, I hope you enjoyed seeing a little bit of the stuff that I write and read and speak every day! It’s pretty intense and lately I've been more and more grateful for the opportunity we have to be here as missionaries learning Japanese and teaching the Japanese people. It's great!

So this week was a pretty good week, Elder Spackman and I are doing pretty well in our finding and in the other things we are doing. I've been trying to stay more on top of everything as a district leader and as just a missionary in general lately. I don't know how mom does it!  She loves schedule and stuff but I feel like when I am making my schedules and to do lists there is never enough time or space to write/do things! It's way intense! I think I'll use a planner during college though. So anyways this last week had good parts and bad parts. The bad part is regardless of what method I tried we were unable to get in touch with any investigators, especially Aoki. I've called and emailed and done everything I can to contact him but he hasn't answered, so that means one of two things either he's avoiding us, or his phone is broken/he is working overtime. I'm still praying way hard for him to come back and meet with us. But in light of not being able to meet with Aoki very much we have been turning to finding as much as possible. I have found that on my mission my effectiveness as I share the gospel has gone up and down kind of like a wave a lot. For example, as my Japanese gets better I forget to testify as much so my finding isn't as good, or as I get better at building relationships of trust on the street I forget to get right into teaching. But I think now I'm starting to level off for the end of my mission and I hope I can remember the fundamentals of missionary work. So this week we have been turning back to the fundamentals and we have been finding a lot of people. So this last week things other than finding were a district leader training, eikaiwa, district meeting, and stake conference.

The training was good, I learned a lot, basically all the things that I could be doing to magnify my calling more, like following up better and stuff like that. Then at eikaiwa I got a good ol' piece of humble pie because Elder Lobaccaro and I taught the bible class. The bible class is where we read the verse in English then translate it into Japanese the best we can and it helps the students with comprehension of the English bible. Translating from the Old Testament is SO flipping hard. I can translate people's talks and stuff but the Old Testament is a whole different ball game. District meeting was good, it was long because of some zone items we have to do now but it was good. Stake conference though was really cool. I enjoyed it when we sang hymns because they put up the kanji words to the songs on the projector and I was able to read the kanji and sing to the songs. So the language is going smoother now. It only took practically 3/4 of my mission but hey I feel decent with Japanese now. So anyways those were the regular events.

We found some solid new potential investigators this week as well. One was a guy named Sasanuma who we met out near the church on a way rainy day (it's rained a lot this transfer) and we were able to teach him a little bit about the importance of prayer and get set to teach him more about it this week. He actually said that after he talked to us he had interest but before he had none. So it was cool! We also met a cool Christian guy and he said we can come back and he will listen after he has read the restoration pamphlet. We also met some cool kids that we are trying to find on Facebook now. Overall not a bad week! Today for the better part of the afternoon we were in a place called Enoshima, I've been there once before with Misu Kyoudai when we went to the aquarium there, and today I got to do the doctor fish thing again! It was way good! I really enjoy it, it's just lots of fun! So that was the week!

I hope I answered everyone's questions! And thank you for all the pictures videos and updates! It was a good day! Also that chocolate milk.... Send it to me! ;) but really it made me want to eat some really good chocolate pudding. Maybe one of those chocolate vanilla swirls... Anyways it's crazy that in only 6 weeks I'll be talking to you guys on FaceTime for the second to last time! Then the next time after that it will be super close so we'll basically be planning returning at that point. Crazy! It's also crazy that Christmas is coming so soon! If you get a chance send me some Christmas music! I'll have more info on what's allowed later so if you want to wait that's probably ok too but still, the more Christmas music, the better! I'm glad Oliver is doing well. I can't wait to meet the little tyke.

Anyways! I hope you guys have a great week! I love you!

 Love,
 Elder Gailey

P.S. Mom, I think I'm actually doing pretty good on clothing so far! My shirts are all good, pants are good, suits and socks are good, shoes are still doing alright, garments too. As far as I can tell right now I'm doing alright on clothes! :)

Transfer and birthday week... Woo!‏

Dear Family,

Hello! This is Elder Gailey, and I'm 20 years old! It's nice to meet you all as a 20 year old! This is the age that I will return home as! How crazy is that, right? This week was pretty intense, transfers, birthday, Sunday. It's all intense! It was good though I had a great birthday and loved hearing from you all, it's still not quite set in that I'm 20 now, but I assume the second I get off the plane next year I will feel like I'm 20. "Elder Terry is also 20 woooooooo hoooooooo!! 20 party whoop woop!" -Elder Terry (he hijacked my email) so anyways on to the week!

Unfortunately even though I have been in daily contact with aoki he didn't show up to church like he said he would, probably because of the rain. I'm not sure why because he hasn't answered since Saturday night. So this week no real progress there. But anyways, Monday night we had a visit with a member family from another ward (they live in our area but they are attending the Tokyo English ward) because Elder Carlini was leaving. It was actually really cool, they were just typical Utah Mormons, BYU fans, super friendly to the missionaries, it was really fun time. We shared our favorite message on love with them, 1 John 4. It went over really well and they were really nice so it was a good time for sure. We spent most of the next day packing (and me cleaning) up until we had another member visit, but this time they took us out to all you can eat pizza. I was even able to talk to brother Isarai about cars a lot. He's a serious F1 fan so he got me wanting to watch some F1 races. But it was cool because now he likes me! Then on the next day for our 4th day in a row, because elder Carlini was transferring we played basketball with a recent convert (Suzuki kyoudai) at the church before eikaiwa. I was able to take some cool GoPro videos of that with my chest mount and stuff, so I'll send the one short enough to send in an email, it's pretty cool! Other than that it was eikaiwa time.

Thursday was transfer day so we got all ready to go, studied, and headed out to lunch at indo curry. Cheese nan are the best! Dad would love it I'm sure! I'm not so sure what everyone else would think but dad would love it. Then I had to ship Elder Carlini off for a new companion. His name is Elder Spackman, he's from eagle Idaho. He's 20 years old, 6th transfer, not quite a year in, super tall, and just came from sagamihara area. So that's the low down on him. We had the Larsen's that night so he immediately got to eat dinner at a members house which I'm sure was cool. Me and Elder Lobaccaro talked with brother Larsen a lot about different language things this time since he is fluent in Chinese and is learning Japanese. I ran district meeting on Friday and am still enjoying being a district leader. Now that I'm in my second transfer and Elder Carlini helped ease me into it so well it feels natural to do all my district meeting stuff and the other responsibilities, for example representing the district at ward council meeting, and making sure the district runs smoothly. It's been pretty nice.

So the 20th birthday now! Woke up that morning with a regular day planned. Right as studies began I got a call from president and sister Wada saying HAPPY BIRTHDAY! So that was really cool, it made me remember last years birthday when they called at the end of the day and sang to me and stuff, it never seemed like I'd hit this birthday and now it's here. It seems so fast from there to here now, time is just flying by! It's insane. So to celebrate unfortunately I wasn't able to use any of my candles but we went to an all you can eat Mexican place for birthday lunch, it's the only one that we know of in the mission so it's super famous among missionaries, and it was delicious. The sisters gave me some presents/cards and it was lots of fun. Then we had an activity at the church to play rumi cube at the church with some members, I ended up coming in 2nd overall; not too bad for it being a while since we played back home! It was lots of fun. Then I spent the rest of the night on some calls and things, I called all of our investigators and a lot of potentials for church. But it rained so anyone who was on the fence didn't come, which was everyone. (aside from aoki, still don't know what happened there) then after planning I got some calls from people around the mission, like Elder poffenberger, Elder Carlini, and Elder brummett. It was nothing super crazy but it felt like a nice slow humble birthday I suppose. Then Sunday progressed like normal, ward council meeting, missionary correlation, church and then after church one of the members (oba kyoudai) invited us over for dinner and cake for my birthday so we went over (he's in his 60s and his mom is pretty old) and it was very unique compared to most dinners at members houses. It was very quiet, no loud voices, and very calm intelligent conversations it was interesting. But lots of fun and the cake was delicious. And today we went to Costco and then I played some shogi (a Japanese version of chess) with Elder Terry and got destroyed. But it was fun! The apartment definitely is different without Elder Carlini, Elder Spackman doesn't really care about much and is a pretty negative guy, kind of reminds me of one of the popular kids at school when they aren't around their popular group. Just blurts things out that if they were with their group would be funny but around people not of that group just makes them sound rude or something like that. So as far as getting along its not bad, it's not hard to get along with people who don't care either way on anything, but it's a little draining to be around someone who looks at the bad side first and is always thinking of more negative things, it kind of shows me how positive I really am sometimes. Moms smile therapy thing from when I was younger worked! Haha I have gotten to the point where it's almost hard to look at things negatively. It's pretty cool! Really makes it easy to always be at least somewhat happy.

Thanks for all the birthday wishes everyone. It was a great time reading all of them and I can't wait to celebrate all the next ones with you. Thanks for all the stuff in the box and just for everything! Ollie is looking way good! I'm way excited to see him next year, and Kaiden too has gotten way big! It's crazy! I feel like everyone will be so much different... I probably will be too, who knows! But I'm way excited for everyone. I love all you guys and I'm very grateful for all the updates and advice in the emails, I'll make sure to keep praying hard for all of my investigators. Please tell Grandma Weaver and Grandma Gailey thank you and I love you for me! Anyways, hopefully I have more exciting things to tell you all next week! I love you!

Love,
Elder Gailey

P.s. If I forgot to answer anything let me know! Woo!

The last birthday email!

Dear Family,

Well this week was the last week of the transfer which means...Everyone is wondering if I'm staying in yamate right!? Welllll I am! Woo! But unfortunately Elder Carlini is taking all his stuff over on a 10 minute train ride to kamiooka area (his very first area) to finish his mission there. So unfortunately there is one person changing in the apartment. My new companions name is Elder Spackman and I haven't heard anything from him yet, nor have I ever met him so all will be revealed in next weeks email! But for now everyone knows that I'm getting a new companion, am still district leader, and am staying in yamate. So that pretty much catches all of you up! But first I've got to tell you about the week.

So this week we tried so hard to meet with our investigators, especially after having both of them at church last week! But they were both busy this week, they weren't able to meet us and they weren't able to go to church, but they are still in contact with us. Aoki kyoudai specifically. He's even still reading and praying (we keep in about every other day contact, sometimes daily) so we are pretty caught up on him so that is going well. I'm excited for him, we think he's ready for a baptismal invite, and we may be meeting for a lesson on Saturday so pray for a birthday meeting! Woo! With this being transfer week we made sure we stayed real busy and we did a lot of member visits and dendoing near them, so that was fun. I also was able to go on splits with Elder Lobaccaro on Thursday. We had a party on splits, didn't talk to a ton of people because the conversations lasted a long time and we had a blast sharing the gospel with them.

This week we went all over the place though, we were able to help sister Takahashi move again, basically we helped her situate her house and built her children's beds. And we met a less active immediately after that, we've been trying to help him in his goal to become active again and ended up giving him a blessing that night as well, so it was a pretty service filled day. Then Wednesday we were just dendoing like normal when we got a call from president Wada, that usually means you did something wrong, so we were pretty nervous. But turns out he was on his way home from an interview and wanted sushi so he invited us to sushi. In our minds that was a once in a mission opportunity so we immediately accepted and got a time figured out... Only problem was that we were walking (bikes were at the church) and we had to meet him in 20 minutes. Well we were 30 minutes from the church and 10 minutes away from the sushi place after arriving to the church... So we ran, we ran the whole 30 minute walk and rode like the wind to make it on time. But, we did it!! So we had a nice sushi dinner before eikaiwa with the president, and we took a lot of funny videos! So enjoy! I also had my smoothest district meeting yet on Friday, it's amazing how the right hymn choice sung for long enough will really help a meeting go well. So that was great. Then on Saturday we did talent show and we were able to get 4 people there! None of them are investigators and all but one are pretty far from it but it was a good activity for them. The talent show went really well and the missionaries didn't even have to perform so it was really nice and we could talk to investigators a lot.

Another fun thing from the week was last night going over to a young family in the ward's house. (the Etchu family) it was lots of fun because the guys younger brother served in this mission and just barely ended about 4 months ago so we all knew him, he actually filled out my health insurance form. So we talking with him a lot it was way fun, he misses all the mission friends that are still missionaries. Then another fun thing, we spent basically the whole day with a potential investigator of ours named shu. He likes bowling so we've been trying to get a time to go bowling all transfer. We finally did it and it was really good, we went to yakiniku afterwards and we actually got to start him on the road to investigator. Now he's not just eikaiwa but full on potential investigator and he's reading the restoration pamphlet right now! Woo! So today was a productive Pday, I also bought a couple Japanese Pokemon games before he got to the bowling place, they are super cheap here, probably $500 at very most for the old ones. So it's been a fun Pday and week, but in all the fun we still worked as hard as possible, I promise.

I'm glad dad and Kaiden had good birthdays! It's crazy that I'll be there for the next one. Hopefully dad can buy a lot of bullets, gotta go to the range for some fun! Sorry to make you cry with the video Meagan! Emilee and Ryan seem to have been having a lot of fun! Keep enjoying life! And Morgan... If you guys come to pick me up I'm going to make you close your eyes before you eat anything or else you will starve for a week or so. If you go on a mission, and if it happened to be here, you'd have a lot of food trouble lol so good luck! Love you! がんばてね〜 I'm glad you made it safe to Utah mom, keep me posted on Oliver and Meagan! I hope everyone has a great week! It's been a great week over here, I'm praying for all of you all the time so I hope it goes well this week! Now I'm transfer 10! A veteran! Crazy stuff! Love you guys!

Love,
Elder Gailey

P.s. I got my packages this week! I wasn't sure weather I should wait or not... So I kind of opened the package already, so THANK YOU!!!! It was a great birthday package and the sweaters are so warm and I definitely needed them already this week. So thank you so much! I'll send lots of pictures and videos!
