Rain and mild temperature... Just like home!‏

Dear Family,

Boy oh boy have we been busy. There wasn't a day this week without a meeting or lesson at the church, if not more than one. It was pretty intense. But really quick before I forget again, HAPPY BIRTHDAY EMILEE AND RYAN! Oh and happy anniversary too! Now back to the week. The main meetings were with Yokoyama, Azuma, and Yamamoto, and then we had zone conference on the Tuesday that took all day. So here we go into a wonderful week!

So Monday was a pretty good day, my feet got stained from playing soccer barefoot against Hibarigaoka district, which we won by a long shot by the way. It was way fun though. Then in zone conference we learned all kinds of good teaching methods, as a mission we're all getting pretty decent at finding, but teaching needs work so they are really focusing on that. So we learned a lot about how to plan and how to teach investigators repentance. It was really cool, we collectively were focusing too much on the steps I think and not enough on applying it in daily life and why we have it. Later we got some Hanno dendo time, but it didn't really have much success that rainy day. We knocked on a house at one point and an Indian lady handed us her phone so we could talk to her English speaking husband and stuff then we gave her the phone and she closed the door and we heard a couple slaps and her kids screaming and running... It was way intense. Eikaiwa is getting even harder because I'm loosing my English and grammar more and more every day... School will be rough!

Thursday was a way busy day, we had lunch at a nearby ramen place, and halfway through we got called by the first pi I found in Tokorozawa, Matsuoka San. So he called up saying he wanted to meet us, but we only had 30 minutes and he said that was fine, so then we met him and talked with him on a park bench. Turns out he's actually part of a huge intense religion in Japan called Sokagakai, and they are required to get a certain amount of dendo as a regular member, so he used us as his dendo time, and so it was a dendo swap for about 30 minutes. I kept it out of a bash, but we both shared and I told him that together we can spread the message of Christ and helping people and he agreed and we parted ways. Way strange 30 minutes. Then we rode an hour out to a members house, where we met with Ooshima Kyoudai, a less active me and Elder Brummett met at the same members house last transfer. It went well we taught him about his relationship with God through prayer by using Enos, one of my favorite books. And it was great, the member even gave us a watermelon that he grew himself! Then we raced back to the church and taught Yokoyama about repentance and stuff just like we were taught at zone conference and it went great!

Next we taught Yamamoto on Friday right before game night, it was way cool because HE PRAYED!! And in that prayer he actually began the repentance process on purpose! He's starting to be intrigued by it all! So we asked him to pray every Day and he accepted it! We taught him about the Book of Mormon, he read all the stuff before the pictures this week, like the intro and stuff. He had a lot of questions but he answered most of them on his own, and this time he also agreed to let us give him homework for his month long vacation! It was way cool! And he's coming to the FHE at the mission home with us today! He's progressing quite nicely now! I just hope his vacation doesn't mess things up. Then we had Azuma, basically we taught him about family history and journals, and he loved it and has been writing in his journal a lot, he even writes about his lessons and studies in it so maybe his kids and grandkids will want to learn! Then that night we taught Yokoyama, well I say taught but really we got together with him and a 19 year old member, Kazu Kyoudai, and watched meet the Mormons together in Japanese! It was funny to watch them take all the jokes seriously... But it was really good for both of them! It was way fun too!

Yesterday at church one of our Hanno pis came to church! We picked him up at the eki (station) and walked to the church in the rain cuz we forgot umbrellas, then he came to all 3 hours of church and stayed for the potluck afterwards! He basicly has no worries about church anymore, so we set up a time to meet him to teach him the doctrines. So hopefully he will start investigating! Then after church and stuff we taught Yokoyama again, this time it was.... The law of chastity... Which wasn't awkward until my companion asked him the same incredibly direct question a bunch about whether he had or hadn't done things, if you catch my drift. He told the member at the beginning that he had, but my companion asked him like 3 more times afterwards, one time in English. It was weird. But he agreed to try and keep it as well as possible. So it went well, he thinks his girlfriend will be ok with it too, which is good. And then last night I died of tired and was only woken from my slumber of death by my alarm going off right by my head for 5 minutes straight. I'm incredibly tired this transfer! It's good though! I figure I can sleep in when I get home! Dad had asked me how Japanese is, I understand most everything and can say most of the things I want, I'm at average missionary speaking and listening level for closing transfer missionaries. I can say or understand pretty much everything, until the lord decides to humble me and suddenly I can't speak any language. But it's been pretty good for learning humility!

I thought a lot about the importance of sacrament meeting this week, it's way dang important! It's one of the best places for investigators and us to build our faith in Christ. So we're pushing really hard for everyone to come to sacrament and understand what it is. Hopefully it goes well! I would encourage everyone to think about how you prepare for sacrament meeting, and how you look at it. I feel like people take it for granted a lot. I certainly have! So I'm going to try and be better! Getting that new ward all set up sounds way intense! In Japanese I would say おつかれさま (お疲れ様) it literally means the honorific tired man, but basicly it means your doing great thanks! Also the house sounds like it's getting a lot of work! It will be way different coming back!  Then Kaiden scored 10 goals... THATS INCREDIBLE! Way cool little man! And boy oh boy I want a Houshka jersey! He's so dang good!

I'm glad my box came! I'll send you an email with some directions on who to give some stuff to in your email mom! Sister Cunningham is taking way good care of me so far, I don't have any super big needs at the moment... But now that Sister Cunningham is in Yakota, the flags would be pretty easy! Just a thought! ;) Looks like Meagan’s house is good and Emilee and Ryan's trip was fun! It was great to hear from everyone! I'll send some pictures from the week! Love you all! If you have any questions let me know! Have a great week!

Maybe I should have stuck with basketball...‏

Dear Family,

Well this week had lots of up and downs! Overall it was good as I think probably every week will be on my mission if I look at it the right way, but still it was good. The first thing to say probably is that Azuma no longer has a baptismal date (explain later) and Yokoyama San has a kind of baptismal date, we're not sure if he can make it or not. But anyways, this week we had some lessons set up that didn't go through, but the biggest focus people, Azuma and Yokoyama were able to meet. Other than that we built up our p.i. pool pretty well and did a lot of fun good finding.

So Yokoyamas lesson was on Tuesday night and we met him with a member about his same age named Brother Shiori. They got along really well, and it turns out that they actually are going into similar majors and will soon be going to the same college along with a lot of other members so maybe they can help keep his interest and his testimony up. We taught him about service, commandments and salvation on Tuesday and he liked it, it seemed! So now hopefully he's not too busy this week so we can meet him again. Right now he's just so busy it's hard to teach him and hard for him to keep commitments so hopefully soon he gets less busy!

Azuma Sans lesson was interesting. We started off by going through the story of Nephi building the boat and his brothers complaining and likened it to life how somethings the Lord asks us to do are hard and people will complain and criticize but if we keep going the Lord will help us out. He really liked it and the member there Kurita Kyoudai was very helpful and Azuma trusts him a lot so he really shared his concerns. Then we discussed why he texted us that week saying he talked to his wife and he can't receive baptism. Turns out his wife just didn't want to talk about it, and that the only reason he was going to get baptized was because he thought that if he didn't then we would stop talking to him and wouldn't help him with English anymore. So we cleared up his misconceptions and gave him a bunch of scenarios to get down to his hearts desire, and he said he might want to be baptized, but not yet. So we gave him some things to ponder, like how being baptized would help his family and him individually, and we'll see how it goes. But for now he doesn't have a date anymore.

Other than that we are finding a lot, and seeing all kinds of miracles in a strange little place called Hanno. The bishop wants a new branch there so he asked us to go dendo up there. So we have been and we have taught surprisingly many street lessons or house lessons up there. Out of about every 5 lessons we get a new legit potential investigator so we have a couple up there, one of them almost came to church yesterday but missed his train or something and couldn't come. But he (Yoshitaka San) wants to meet up this week. So I'll update you there! There's been lots of other miracles for example we were doing a Kubari (passing out flyers for eikaiwa) and we weren't having much success and we felt like we should head home early to beat the rain. So we headed to our bikes and said hello (in English) and he was like "oh hey!" And we talked to him about his stay in America and then asked if we could share a message about Christ since he had been to church before, and he accepted and we taught him the whole restoration right there and we were able to get his number and will be teaching him this week some time! Awesome stuff! Talking to everyone is how we find miracles! So yeah it was a good week! Today we're going to a big park in the main city to hang out with the Hibarigaoka district, so that will be fun. Oh another fun thing is on Saturday we went to that park and played some basketball, we met a cool Filipino guy who was really good and we got a big game going with him and some of his friends and we were able to get his information and he's down to hear the lessons! So that was cool and on top of that I was actually able to play basketball for the first time ever! I was actually making quite a few shots. Definitely don't know how to defend in basketball though.

Sounds like the house is in an interesting look right now, send some pictures if you can! How's Meagan's house? Kaiden is going to be the next Clint Dempsey! That was a way cool play to watch! Woah... A North Lake Tapps ward... Weird! It's kind of a bummer I won't have Bishop Johnson when I come back though! Maybe I'll have to have you guys set something up. Although having my dentist as a bishop will be interesting! He'll be impressed! I brush a lot now and my teeth would barely take any cleaning at the dentist compared to usual! Look at that! In other news I just remembered I got pulled over on my bike this week... That's a thing in Japan apparently... Elder Moa and I were riding side by side for like 3 seconds as we switched places so he could lead us home and we got pulled over for it. Just a warning but it was a potential 200 dollar fine, so we were blessed not to pay that! But that's a thing apparently. Hope you all have a great week this week and that no one gets pulled over on a bike! Love you guys!

Love,
Elder Gailey

P.S. Mom I had a thought, winter is going to be coming up soon, do you think in a package sometime before November when it gets real cold you could send me a hoodie, a nice warm one, I'll buy a good overcoat for dendo here, but their hoodies aren't the best. Also if it's not too expensive or hard to send, could you send me an American flag, like full sized like the ones the runners in the Olympics wave around if they win? And also if you can it would be awesome to have a 12th man flag... (The light blue one with the 12) but they are all just random thoughts now needs except the hoodie. So anyways, thanks mom and dad and everyone!

Almost hump day!‏

Dear Family,

Well this week was a doozy. It started out pretty slow, but it got busy really fast. So we spent most of the beginning of the week getting Elder Brummett and the apartment ready to transfer. He would pack and I would clean type deal. Although a couple times we did splits so I went with elder Kerr (district leader) and the other 2 were packing. Then on Thursday it was transfer day so I got my "new" companion that day! Like I told you last week his name is Elder Soane Moa and he's from New Zealand. He was here in my district last transfer, just in the 2 man apartment, but now he is in the regular 4 man apartment and as far as we can tell the mission is closing down the 2 man. So anyways, he was in Tokorozawa C with their investigators last transfer so now this transfer we are Tokorozawa B with all of mine and his investigators combined. So it is a very full area book now. I think we have somewhere around 14 investigators, 4 progressing investigators, and 1 baptismal date (talk about that later). So anyways that's the update on the transfer stuff, other than that generally it is not as hot recently, granted we've been teaching and planning more so there has been some good time spent in the church and apartment, but still when we go out to dendo it's not as hot. Actually it's raining like crazy right now and was so cold in the apartment I had to use a blanket for studies. But anyways that's the current update.

So on pday, we went bowling! Man was that fun! I'm not a super good bowler, but I played pretty decent! So that was cool. There was an investigator from elder Moa and his companion that came and we were able to do some get to know you stuff which was really good, hopefully we can work some more with him now that he's one of my investigators too. But we got a call right around the end of bowling from a member who we were planning to eat lunch with. But when he called he said that he was at the restaurant already an hour and a half early. So we finished bowling and rode the 45 minute ride all the way back as fast as possible, and made it by the original time, but the member was mad we weren't there an hour and a half early. Anyways that was interesting. Then then next couple days we dendo'd when possible and packed and cleaned the rest. We were able to see a p.i. Named Christian one more time before he went back to France on Tuesday, and elder Kerr and I met a way crazy guy in a park. He was just chilling on a bench so we said hello and he would just go off on how he knows Christianity then ask us to teach him then he would say "oh I know that already!" Then his mom yelled from his apartment (he was 27 mind you) for him to stop talking to the gaijin and come in to which he yelled back to shut up so we talked a tiny bit more and headed out. It was interesting for sure. Eikaiwa this week was weird too! None of he advanced students (the class I teach) were there so we waited and a guy who is more fluent in English than we are came in and talked with us for an hour about health and random movies and problems with obesity. Way weird night. Then on Thursday it switched back to normal.

Thursday was spent mostly getting Elder Brummett and Elder Nichalson ready to transfer and sending them off on their train. Then Elder Moa and I did weekly planning and got ready to teach one of their investigators Yokoyama San, but he got hung up at work so he couldn't make it. But we got everything planned for all our investigators and it was good. We were able to do some regular dendo on Friday but then at 6:00 we had another lesson with Yamamoto. We had a ward member, brother ochiai there to help and it did help for sure. We were reading in 2 nephi 31 with Yamamoto and I felt like we should stop and talk about a scripture in there I'm pretty sure it was verse 12. It talks about following Christ and being baptized so you can receive the Holy Ghost. We talked about it and about religion and his thought processes and stuff and at all the questions he moved closer and closer to the Christian side of the discussion. Then we talked about prayer and why it's important, what it is, and how to do it, and even though he said he understood prayer before, he really didn't because it was all new what we explained. Then we asked him to pray, and he was shy so he said no for the lesson but accepted the invitation to pray before next week! So he may be making some more progress soon! Booya! Then we went to our game night thing and Doctor Azuma (the potential investigator one) came again! First time in a while.

Then Azuma (the investigator one) came to the church on Saturday for his lesson. Boy oh boy was that a good time. We had a member there who was recently within the last 6 months reactivated. He wanted to help the missionaries so he came and we taught Azuma the gospel of Jesus Christ. At the beginning I asked him if he had faith in Jesus Christ, and he laughed at me then said in perfect English "if I didn't have faith in Christ I wouldn't be coming to our lessons!" Which made us all laugh. Anyways towards the end of the lesson with lots of testimonies and stuff, even from the member we talked about baptism again. His only problem with baptism is he has to get his wife to tell him he can, but that's a bit difficult if he doesn't talk to her about it. So anyways we talked about it and set a date for September 5th. He said if his wife will let him, he will be baptized on that day! And so we made some plans to teach him every week and to follow up lots to see how his wife is with it, and I think he'll be able to make it!

Then Sunday was full of surprises too. We were going through church like normal, none of our investigators could come to sacrament so we were just setting things up with members, then someone comes and grabs us and says that there is someone looking for us in the front area. So we head out there and Doctor Azuma and his wife had just arrived (the potential investigator one, not the one with the baptismal date) and so we went over and said hello, and the sisters took his wife to gospel principles and we talked with him for a second. Then after introducing him to a member (Brother Suda) he said he came to hear a lesson from us so Brother Suda found a room and we all 4 went in and started teaching a lesson, mostly just calming his fears about churches and religion. But he built a good friendship with Brother Suda so by the end he was willing to give prayer a try and he really liked it. He said he would try it out again in private throughout the week! But because we finally got another lesson with him he is now an investigator too! So watch out in the emails for Azuma (baptismal date) and Doctor Azuma (the new investigator). Then yesterday we did a bunch of housing and an old lady almost fell over and died while talking to us but she managed to catch herself on a tree and didn't die. So anyways that's the bulk of my week!
I hope everyone has had a good week at home! It sounds like everyone is back at their normal homes safe and sound, and that everyone has been enjoying their days. Kaiden's videos were the best! And all the pictures too were great, thanks everyone! Who knew baby carrots would keep dad awake the whole way home! I can't believe this week I hit my year mark, hump day! It feels like it's been 10 years some days and 10 days other days. But now that it's here it's really cool to be able to look back and see how I've grown, what I've gotten better at, what I still need to work on. It's pretty intense. But it's been a great week and it'll be a great last year I think. I'm excited to still have another year for working, but I am excited to be back driving up to rainier for dad to take pictures. Anyways thanks for all the updates! I hope everyone has a great week this week and that we all remember the power of prayer. I love you guys!

Love,
Elder Gailey

P.S. I'm on the lookout for it mom! Also the package should be there probably at the very end of the month so no worries. Thanks! Hey if you have any time could you send me some bagpipe hymns or something? Thanks!

Rockin Roller Coaster

Dear Family,

Well this week has been all over the place. Ups, downs, good times, hard times, it's been everywhere. We got transfer calls this week and my transfer call is that I'm staying here! And Elder Moa, one of the elders in my district is going to be my new companion. He is switching from the 2 man apartment into my 4 man apartment and they are closing his 2 man. So now it's just the apartment I've been in my whole time in Tokorozawa. So that's the big news! But other than that this week was pretty slow.

I was on splits on Wednesday when we went to go visit a less active member named Eduardo, who surprisingly answered his door and agreed to meet with us on Thursday, meaning this upcoming Thursday, and play some ping pong and talk about the lessons and things, so that was really cool, especially since it took forever to get to his house, it was all sorts of hill filled roads. And it was incredibly hot that day, as just about every day has been. Elder Nichalson and I then went to a park (I was on splits with him) and we were looking for people to talk to and we saw a huge group of 14 year old kids playing soccer so we said hello and asked to play and they let us and we got a big game going with these kids. They were way better than us, but we still did pretty well, I scored a couple goals and that was sweet! And hopefully from now they will remember when they met us and when they are older will talk to the missionaries! Felt like a Brazilian missionary for a bit! So that was really cool. That night during eikaiwa is when I got dads email about grandpa. I didn't read it in full at the time but I knew what it was. So we taught, and we got home and I wrote in my journal and read the email.

It was difficult that night for sure, but having just barely that day told people that families are eternal and about the plan of salvation really helped. I didn't fall asleep until about 1:00 or so, and apparently I slept way restlessly because I kept shooting up in my sleep and shouting things in the room apparently... So enjoy that mental image of me just freaking out in my futon in the middle of the night in my sleep. Thursday we fasted, and during the fast we saw some miracles like one of our dropped appointments from last week called us up and made a new one and we got a lesson with Azuma set up. Not to mention the fast really helped me to be able to work through it all. Friday we taught Yamamoto and had a talent show for game night. It was interesting, mostly just missionaries but it was good. Yamamoto asks really general questions but is always looking for a really specific answer so it was a long lesson but he is still just as interested. So that's a good thing. I played the piano in the talent show to fill in time, and it went  pretty well. Then we taught Azuma on Saturday, and taught him about the plan of salvation. Coincidence? I think not. So now he really likes the plan of salvation and is thinking a little more seriously about baptism. Next time we should have a member with us so it will be good. Then on Sunday we sang in sacrament meeting "God be with you till we meet again." Coincidence? I think not. Lots of those moments came up. But it definitely felt good to sing that song on the same day, if you are counting the date line, as grandpas funeral. Then last night coming home from a returning missionary testimony meeting in Kichijoji there was a train crash and subsequent fire that made our hour journey home take almost 3 hours. It was a long night but we got to bed sometime around 11:30. So anyways that was my week.

I am really grateful for all the emails and all the help. The pictures of the funeral were great, I wish I could have been there to see it all and help you guys. I forgot for a little bit about the soldiers funeral parts, like the flag and taps. That was incredible to see. I'm glad the prayers and the service went well. It looks like everyone is doing well with it all too, smiles in pictures, and everyone knowing that he's not suffering anymore. It's good to see and it helps me. Feel free to send those pictures mom. I'm lucky to be a part of such a great family, I love you all and I can't wait till I can see you all again, but for now I'll keep working as hard as I can out here, do my best to keep up my "always smiling" reputation I have in the mission, and hopefully keep helping people. Have an amazing week!

Love,
Elder Gailey

Going... Going... And caught by the pitcher.‏

Dear Family,

Well this last week was a doozy! It's more towards the end of temple pday today, as I'm sure you figured out by no email yesterday, but it's been a good pday so far. We stopped off in Shibuya to eat at the first Taco Bell in Japan (outside of the bases) on the way home from the temple, and boy, it was a different place than I expected. Their menu was small but still the same food, but they didn't have baja blast Mountain Dew for me to try... I was sad about that for sure. But it was good, and the temple was even better. I didn't get Moms email until after the temple but I had already put their names in. Thanks for the update.

This last week we had a lot of appointments but basically every single one was a no show or a cancelation. Hence this week being a doozy. There were some cool miracles for the week though! Unfortunately Azuma was busy all week, so we didn't teach him, but we did have a blitz on Wednesday. So we went out to Tokorozawa station and met as a zone and went out for 3 hours for an hour of streeting, then housing, then kubari. Every time was a different companion. So the first time I was on housing duty, and we gave out 3 book of Mormons to people who we woke up by ringing the doorbell, so that was way funny. Then I streeted, and while talking to an old guy he said "ahhh my legs are bad, goodbye!" In Japanese, then proceeded to hobble off and start to fall but luckily I was able to mostly catch him so he didn't get hurt and just kept walking. Then we were supposed to kubari but housed instead and met a man named Ahamed, who is Muslim but his wife is Christian and they teach each other about their religions, so we asked him if he would like to learn a little bit about ours with his wife and he agreed! He didn't show up to the appointment, but it was a miracle none the less! So the blitz was really good.

So the only lessons we were able to teach this week that weren't no shows, were Matsumoto San and Yamamoto San. We had a member come to the lesson with Matsumoto and it helped a lot. Basically Matsumoto wants a new body and healing and that's all, but brother Ochiai dropped the smack down on him and in his Japanese way taught him about the importance of doing things, and he listened to him a lot more than us, so we talked about faith and needing to hear everything to understand the healing power of the gospel and priesthood, and that type, of thing. As expected he immediately asked us to heal him when he found out we hold the priesthood, but by the end he understood and again accepted the invitation to pray. Yamamoto was an even better lesson though, unfortunately a member wasn't able to come, but it was a shorter lesson, just on Moroni 7, although his questions weren't on the doctrines in the chapter yet, he is making progress. He said that since he started looking for what the writer wants us to understand from it his interest in reading has jumped up significantly. So he read the chapter 5 or 6 times, and this week he is reading it again one more time to see if he can answer some of his own questions before his next lesson where we will discuss them. After that lesson we watched meet the Mormons for our game night activity. And that was really good, Yamamoto really enjoyed it, other than the fact that the Japanese subtitles were horrible and the English was too hard for him to understand.

Something fun for the week was going to play softball with the ward! We did that on Saturday in the morning, at the insanely early time of 6:00. So we had to get up way early. But we played and turns out my first baseman skills aren't too bad but my batting skills, those are a completely other concept. So baseball was fun even though my only hit was caught by the 70 ish year old Ward member who was pitching... It was quite the laugh for everyone for sure. At any rate it was a pretty alright week. I'm still struggling with getting my companion to work and talk to people, overall he still just sits silently and even when we get nice formal lessons where it's easy to teach, he won't participate and tells me to teach because he doesn't want to. In gospel principles class on Sunday I taught the lesson which was supposed to be our companionship lesson because Elder Brummett told me he didn't want to teach people. It's hard to help him because as we've been talking through the transfer I've found out more and more and he really doesn't want to baptize anyone from what it sounds like and how he says he doesn't plan to have any baptisms, so I guess there's not much I can do there other than be an example by going out every day and getting as much done as best as I can. So that's what I've been doing every day, with no backup all transfer, and I'm exhausted. But maybe some of it will help at least. We'll see who I'm with next transfer. I dunno.

Anyways I'm glad to get everyone's emails this week, and yes as you have seen on the weather it is horrendously hot. I feel like my body is boiling on the inside most days and it is hard because of all the dropped lessons and stuff we have had to be outside ALL the time. And that doesn't help my companion because he just wants to be inside. But it sounds like home is hot too! I've been wondering what it's like there, at least here everyone has air conditioning, even if it is 80s style non-centralized air. It's all good though. I love you all! Always remember that through all life's trials, if we look for it, we can find gods hand lifting us up and keeping us from falling all the way down. There were countless prophets in the gal of bitterness and endless woe, which sounds pretty not fun to me, but they were always helped, Enos for example was forgiven of his sins and had light shone into his life again. Even when it's tough, the light is always there. Have a great week!

Love,
Elder Gailey

P.S. Keep me posted on grandpa, I'm trying not to worry about it too much right now and just focus so it won't throw me off too bad, but I would like to know as soon as you do. If I could only have one favor, please let him know or have grandma let him know that I love him. I don't like the thought of him not being there for things like me being home or camping or golfing or getting married in the future, but if he could know one thing it's that I love him. Thanks everyone. Keep holding strong Dad, Mom, everyone. You're the best.
